  2. The Summers County Historical Society has released its newest book, "One-Room Schools of Summers County." It is based on the research of former Superintendent of Schools, the late Charles Saunders. Saunders himself taught in one-room schools.
The hardback book is over 350 pages and includes information about 200 one-room schools in the county, beginning with some in existence before the Civil War and going through 1972 when the last one was closed. There are many photos of the old buildings and former pupils plus stories submitted by some of those students. The book sells for $35. Proceeds will go towards a scholarship fund for a Summers County students interested in history. The book is for sale at various locations in the area: Massie Insurance on Temple Street in Hinton, the Summers County Chamber of Commerce in Avis (Hinton), T & C Book Exchange in Beaver, Best Foam and Fabric in Beckley, and Bridgewalk Shops in Alderson. It may also be purchased by mail at PO Box 295, Hinton, WV 25951. Mail orders should include $5 for postage.

  3. I looking for assistance in finding the parents of John Robert Skellenger,(1920-1985). I believe that the parents may be Lawrence Skellenger (1888-1965) and Kathryn Leigh (maiden name unknown)(1898-1975). John Robert listed his date of birth as 6 May 1920 in Hinton, Summers, WV, His parents were present in the 1920 US Census living in the Greenbrier section of Summers Co, however, John Robert was not with them. The(possible)parents leave the marriage prior to 1930 and it appears John Robert then resides with his mother until she remarries prior to 1940. In the 1940 census she appears to have remarried to John S Katzenberger. In a July 1941 WWII Draft Registration Card, John Robert identifies Mrs J S Katzenberg(er) as his next of kin and lists Henlawson, Logan, WV as his residence.
Here are the elements of information I would like:
was Lawrence Skellenger his bio or adoptive/foster father,
and, what was the maiden name of his mother?
Any assistance you may be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Mike Skelenger
